Native Woodland Scheme
This Scheme was first launched by the Forest Service in 2001.
An application was made by An Óige for funding for the Conservation of an Alder Woodland at our land at Knockree.
An application was also made for funds to establish a new native woodlands on the site.
Both applications were successful and work has now commenced. Thousands of native trees will be planted and fenced off. The woodlands will be maintained for a period of four years by a Contractor approved by the Forest Service.
Irish Tree Trivia
Before people arrived in Ireland some 9,000 years ago, most of the island was covered with woods.
The pine forests on the mountains only lasted 5,000 years and were gone by early Christian times. This is because around that time the climate got colder and wetter, and bogs began to grow, swamping out these forests. The remains of those ancient pine forests can still be found today buried in the peat of our blanket bogs.
Recycling of mobile phones and printer cartridges in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital
An Óige has been engaged in this work for a few years now. We would like to remind our members and friends not to throw out their old mobiles and printer cartridges but to bring them into our Head Office for recycling instead.
